Mini Scallop Shell GyotakuMaking this print was so much fun! Here I've used a scallop shell that was donated to me by a marine biologist who lives locally. The print measures just over 10cmx10cm so it really is mini. The print is made using the finest quality Acrylic ink. I've used a blue and gold ink and blended them on the surface of the shell. The process of Gyotaku means that every print is completely unique. They are all hand inked and hand pressed. I always find it

Gyotaku process sees ink applied to the surface of the specimen and then paper is pressed onto the surface making an impression

I then flattened it using the Urauchi method

To achieve a flat print I use the traditional wet mounting process that has been used in the east for centuries

the print measures 35cmx66cm approx

Like a lobster it's much more 3 dimensional than a fish so there is a lot of work to do making sure things don't slip and slide around
