19th-Century Portrait Of An Officer In UniformA fine late 19th century portrait of a dashing young German officer in his parade uniform. Its a sensitive portrayal, which is quite unusual for a military piece. The officers hair is slicked back, probably with pomade, which was all the rage in Germany at the time. The painting is housed within what appears to be its original frame. Medium Oil on canvas Overall size 19 x 23 48cm x 60cm Year of creation c. 1900 Provenance Germany Condition The canvas
It’s possible that the painting was based on or over an earlier photograph rather than painted from life
A few light scratches but otherwise fine
and considerable darkening
It’s interesting to consider the inclusion of the statue in this piece
