Celebrated as one of New Zealands best looking and quickest topsail schooners, Huia was launched at Kaipara Harbour in 1894. Built with kauri planks over a puriri frame, she measured about 35m (115ft) and registered 196 tons, purpose built for the timber trade. In her early years she carried lumber to Sydney and returned with coal from Newcastle, quickly earning a reputation for speed on the hazardous
